Pilates Ab Exercises vs Standard Sit-Ups
You don’t need a lot of time to improve your core strength with Pilates. It’s a fact. Studies show that Pilates exercises like the roll-up and teaser beat sit-ups by far. They may not work your six pack muscle – the rectus abdominus – as much but that is a good thing! In contrast, they fire your transversus abdominus, the natural corset you have around your waist, that runs from the back around the waist and cinches in your waist. It helps you look lean, support your spine and keep your organs well-maintained. The six-pack-muscle moves your body up and down in exercises like the sit-up and can give you that ripped effect. But it also creates bulk. In between those muscles lie the internal and external obliques. They can stabilise and move you…
But enough muscle talk already. Why am I telling you this? Well, because it’s really worthwhile doing Pilates to improve your core strength. And it’s a very different way of strengthening to going to ab blast classes or the like. I stress this in my Pilates classes with clients. And here’s now some scientific back-up for what I’m talking about: the aforementioned teaser is a whopping 266% more effective at targeting the external obliques than a sit-up! WOW! And that’s just one of the exercises. Click here for more info on the different exercises and a How To guide. Prepare to be AMAZED! Ever wondered why Pilates instructors seem to have a different mid section from very fit gym junkies? Well….
Or check out my Pilates in Manly video below. It’s 15 minutes jam-packed to work your whole body.
There are a few very effective exercises like the teaser. Instead of doing sit-ups or going at it like an energiser bunny in the gym, give Pilates a shot and feel the difference. I guarantee you, you’ll get better and faster results and your body will love you for it.
And you really don’t need much other than a mat and some exercise gear. Not enough room? No excuses! I even demonstrated Pilates in a shop window at Lululemon once!
